A man believed to be wanted in connection with a home invasion and robbery investigation was shot and killed by police during an anti-crime exercise in Ste Madeleine early this morning.
The deceased has been identified as Mikael Isaiah Lewis of Corinth Hills.
In a media release, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said the incident occurred around 3 am on October 23, after officers received information that two armed men had attempted to rob an individual but were unsuccessful before fleeing the scene.
The officers were travelling east along Hibiscus Drive, San Fernando, when two men approached them and reported the attempted robbery. The informants reportedly indicated that the suspects were from Corinth Hills.
Police said officers proceeded to the area and, while travelling north along Alexandra Lane, saw a man on the lower staircase who matched the description of one of the suspects.
According to the TTPS, when officers called out to the man, he ran up the stairs while holding his waist. Officers pursued him and ordered him to stop.
At the top of the staircase, the man allegedly pointed a firearm at the officers and refused repeated commands to drop it.
Three officers then discharged their service pistols.
The man fell to the ground, and an object believed to be a firearm fell from his hand. Officers secured the object and found that the man was injured but still showing signs of life.
He was taken in a marked police vehicle to the San Fernando General Hospital, where he was treated by medical personnel. However, he was pronounced dead at about 3.46 am.
The TTPS said police records indicated that Lewis was wanted in connection with a home invasion and robbery investigation in the Mon Repos district.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are continuing, including possible links to other robbery, home invasion and firearm related investigations.
The anti crime exercise focused on detecting and suppressing firearm related offences, robberies and home invasions. It was conducted under the leadership of senior officers, including Senior Superintendent Hospedales, Superintendent Bertie and Woman Superintendent Bridglal.
