AMCHAM T&T to mark 30 years of HSSE advocacy

In­ter­na­tion­al health, safe­ty, se­cu­ri­ty and en­vi­ron­ment (HSSE) ex­perts Paula Davis and Niel Harp­er will head­line the Amer­i­can Cham­ber of Com­merce of Trinidad and To­ba­go’s (AM­CHAM T&T) 30th An­nu­al HSSE Con­fer­ence and Ex­hi­bi­tion.

The two-day con­fer­ence is sched­uled for Oc­to­ber 27 and 28 at the Hy­att Re­gency Trinidad and will bring to­geth­er busi­ness lead­ers, HSSE pro­fes­sion­als, gov­ern­ment rep­re­sen­ta­tives and in­dus­try ex­perts.

This year’s con­fer­ence marks three decades of AM­CHAM T&T’s ad­vo­ca­cy and aware­ness-build­ing around health, safe­ty, se­cu­ri­ty and en­vi­ron­men­tal prac­tices.

The theme, “In­tel­li­gent and Re­silient by De­sign”, re­flects the ex­pand­ing scope of HSSE, which now in­cludes cy­ber­se­cu­ri­ty, psy­cho­log­i­cal safe­ty, en­vi­ron­men­tal re­silience, hu­man fac­tors, emer­gency pre­pared­ness, busi­ness con­ti­nu­ity and the re­spon­si­ble use of tech­nol­o­gy.

AM­CHAM T&T chief ex­ec­u­tive of­fi­cer Ni­rad Tewarie said the or­gan­i­sa­tion had ad­vo­cat­ed for HSSE for 30 years be­cause safe­ty was fun­da­men­tal to how suc­cess­ful or­gan­i­sa­tions op­er­ate.

He said the an­niver­sary pro­vid­ed an op­por­tu­ni­ty to re­flect on the or­gan­i­sa­tion’s work while look­ing ahead to build­ing a stronger cul­ture of safe­ty, re­silience and re­spon­si­bil­i­ty across Trinidad and To­ba­go.

Davis, a glob­al speak­er, strate­gic ad­vis­er and award-win­ning au­thor, will open the first day with a pre­sen­ta­tion ti­tled “Healthy Lead­ers. Healthy Sys­tems: Team­ing Up Against Burnout”.

Her pre­sen­ta­tion will ex­am­ine burnout as a busi­ness risk and ex­plore prac­ti­cal ap­proach­es to strength­en­ing re­silience among lead­ers and teams.

On the sec­ond day, Harp­er, a cy­ber­se­cu­ri­ty and dig­i­tal trust leader and ad­vi­so­ry pro­fes­sion­al with the In­ter­na­tion­al Telecom­mu­ni­ca­tion Union (ITU) and ISACA, will de­liv­er “When Sys­tems Fail: Re­silience by De­sign: Lead­ing Through Risk in an In­tel­li­gent, In­ter­con­nect­ed World”.

His pre­sen­ta­tion will fo­cus on the grow­ing links be­tween tech­nol­o­gy, cy­ber­se­cu­ri­ty, lead­er­ship and or­gan­i­sa­tion­al re­silience.

For the first time in 2026, AM­CHAM T&T will al­so host a two-day Cy­ber­se­cu­ri­ty Con­fer­ence si­mul­ta­ne­ous­ly with the HSSE Con­fer­ence.

The cy­ber­se­cu­ri­ty ses­sions will ex­am­ine emerg­ing dig­i­tal risks, in­clud­ing ar­ti­fi­cial in­tel­li­gence and cy­ber­se­cu­ri­ty, cy­ber-dri­ven fi­nan­cial at­tacks, pre­dic­tive AI-based pro­tec­tion, third-par­ty and sup­ply-chain vul­ner­a­bil­i­ties, and re­silience amid what or­gan­is­ers de­scribe as per­ma­nent dis­rup­tion.

The con­fer­ence will al­so fea­ture an HSSE Ex­hi­bi­tion, al­low­ing par­tic­i­pants to en­gage with in­dus­try pro­fes­sion­als and ex­plore so­lu­tions, along with spe­cialised work­shops of­fer­ing prac­ti­cal in­sights and pro­fes­sion­al de­vel­op­ment.

AM­CHAM T&T said the con­fer­ences are in­tend­ed to help or­gan­i­sa­tions bet­ter an­tic­i­pate risks, pro­tect peo­ple and strength­en re­silience by in­cor­po­rat­ing HSSE con­sid­er­a­tions in­to lead­er­ship, de­ci­sion-mak­ing and busi­ness strat­e­gy.
