Former First Citizens Group CEO Jason Julien has joined Liberty Caribbean as Vice President and Country Manager for Trinidad and Tobago.

Liberty Caribbean, which operates Flow, Liberty Business and BTC, announced the appointment as part of a regional executive reshuffle that also sees Simone Martin-Šulgan move to Barbados as Vice President and Country Manager.

Julien will have responsibility for the commercial and financial performance of Liberty Caribbean’s Trinidad and Tobago operations, the company’s second-largest market. He will lead the team as the business moves into its next phase of growth.

Liberty Caribbean CEO Inge Smidts welcomed Julien, pointing to his experience leading a large, highly regulated, customer-focused organisation.

Julien joined Liberty Caribbean after serving as Group CEO of First Citizens Group Financial Holdings. He left First Citizens on August 31, after nine months and nine days in the role.

Julien previously told Guardian Media that he “definitely was not forced out” of First Citizens and that he chose to resign after being presented with an opportunity to work with a US company.

Martin-Šulgan, who led Liberty Caribbean’s commercial operations in Trinidad and Tobago for five years, will take over the company’s Barbados operations from Desron Bynoe. She will also become Head of Brand, Media and Communications at the regional level.

In that expanded role, Martin-Šulgan will oversee Barbados’ commercial and financial performance while leading efforts to strengthen Liberty Caribbean’s brands, marketing and engagement with customers, employees and stakeholders.

Bynoe is moving into another commercial leadership role within the company, with responsibility for bringing his expertise to other markets.

Smidts described the appointments as part of Liberty Caribbean’s focus on developing Caribbean talent and leadership across its markets.

He also outlined the company’s focus on having Caribbean talent drive its digital transformation and move between markets within the region.
