Ministry touts steelpan’s role in shaping young people and cultural industry

The Min­istry of Cul­ture and Com­mu­ni­ty De­vel­op­ment is us­ing World Steel­pan Day to pro­mote the steel­pan not on­ly as Trinidad and To­ba­go’s na­tion­al mu­si­cal in­stru­ment, but as a po­ten­tial ve­hi­cle for youth de­vel­op­ment and growth in the cul­tur­al in­dus­try.

In a World Steel­pan Day 2026 mes­sage, Cul­ture Min­is­ter Michelle Ben­jamin said the in­stru­ment pro­vides young peo­ple with op­por­tu­ni­ties to de­vel­op dis­ci­pline, pro­duc­tiv­i­ty and tol­er­ance, while build­ing con­fi­dence, cre­ativ­i­ty and an ap­pre­ci­a­tion for the coun­try’s cul­tur­al her­itage.

The min­istry said it sees to­day’s young pan­nists as po­ten­tial fu­ture com­posers, arrangers, ed­u­ca­tors, man­u­fac­tur­ers and cul­tur­al rep­re­sen­ta­tives.

It said the Gov­ern­ment, through the Min­istry and oth­er agen­cies, in­tends to sup­port the steel­pan fra­ter­ni­ty while pro­mot­ing the in­stru­ment and its as­so­ci­at­ed in­dus­try to­wards what it de­scribes as sus­tain­able growth.

The min­istry al­so cred­it­ed gen­er­a­tions of pan­nists, arrangers, builders and oth­er prac­ti­tion­ers with help­ing to de­vel­op the in­stru­ment and take its sound to in­ter­na­tion­al au­di­ences.

Steel­pan was de­vel­oped in Trinidad and To­ba­go from dis­card­ed met­al and has since be­come an in­stru­ment used in­ter­na­tion­al­ly.

The min­istry said its fo­cus is now on en­sur­ing the in­stru­ment’s fu­ture ex­tends be­yond per­for­mance, with young peo­ple po­si­tioned to be­come part of a wider steel­pan ecosys­tem.

To­day’s World Steel­pan Day ac­tiv­i­ties

World Steel­pan Day ac­tiv­i­ties will take place at sev­er­al lo­ca­tions, pri­mar­i­ly in Port of Spain.

The pro­gramme be­gins at the Massy Trinidad All Stars Steel Or­ches­tra pa­n­yard and will con­clude at the Queen’s Park Sa­van­nah, where young per­form­ers from var­i­ous steel or­ches­tras will be fea­tured.

The Na­tion­al Steel Sym­pho­ny Or­ches­tra of Trinidad and To­ba­go will al­so per­form at the front court of the Na­tion­al Acad­e­my for the Per­form­ing Arts from 3pm, be­fore con­tin­u­ing to the Sa­van­nah as part of the cel­e­bra­tions.

The ac­tiv­i­ties are be­ing sup­port­ed by the Min­istry in part­ner­ship with Pan Trin­ba­go, the world gov­ern­ing body for steel­pan.
