Woman, 65, dies after Marabella crash

A 65-year-old woman died af­ter she was struck by a van along the South­ern Main Road in Mara­bel­la on Tues­day.

Po­lice iden­ti­fied the vic­tim as Jameela Bas­ral­ly of Soledad Road West, Clax­ton Bay.

Ac­cord­ing to ini­tial re­ports, Bas­ral­ly was walk­ing near Mar­ket Street when she was hit by a pan­el van dri­ven by a 51-year-old man. In­ves­ti­ga­tors were told the dri­ver swerved to avoid col­lid­ing with an­oth­er ve­hi­cle be­fore strik­ing the pedes­tri­an.

Bas­ral­ly was tak­en to the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal, where she lat­er died while re­ceiv­ing treat­ment.

Videos cir­cu­lat­ing on so­cial me­dia showed the woman ly­ing at the side of the road near the fence of JTA Su­per­mar­ket as mem­bers of the pub­lic tried to as­sist her be­fore emer­gency re­spon­ders ar­rived. Her son was al­so at the scene.

Bas­ral­ly would have cel­e­brat­ed her 66th birth­day on Sep­tem­ber 2.

Mara­bel­la po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing the in­ci­dent.
