US Embassy: T&T designates 25 criminal groups as terrorists

The Unit­ed States Em­bassy in Trinidad and To­ba­go says Trinidad and To­ba­go has tak­en a ma­jor step in strength­en­ing re­gion­al co­op­er­a­tion against nar­co-ter­ror­ism by join­ing the Unit­ed States in des­ig­nat­ing 25 crim­i­nal or­gan­i­sa­tions as for­eign ter­ror­ist or­gan­i­sa­tions.

In a post on its so­cial me­dia pages on Mon­day morn­ing, the em­bassy said Trinidad and To­ba­go was the first Shield of the Amer­i­c­as coun­try to join the Unit­ed States in mak­ing the des­ig­na­tions.

Trinidad and To­ba­go joined the Shield of the Amer­i­c­as at the ini­tia­tive’s in­au­gur­al sum­mit in Do­ral, Flori­da, on March 7, 2026, where Prime Min­is­ter Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar was among the re­gion­al lead­ers in­vit­ed by US Pres­i­dent Don­ald Trump.

“The Unit­ed States and Trinidad and To­ba­go are ad­vanc­ing our shared mis­sion to con­front nar­co-ter­ror­ism and pro­tect our com­mu­ni­ties,” the em­bassy said.

The post al­so shared com­ments from Juan Pablo Se­gu­ra, the US As­sis­tant Sec­re­tary of State for West­ern Hemi­sphere Af­fairs, who com­mend­ed Trinidad and To­ba­go for the move.

“An­oth­er ma­jor step for­ward for the Shield of the Amer­i­c­as! We com­mend Trinidad and To­ba­go for be­ing the first Shield of the Amer­i­c­as na­tion to join the Unit­ed States in des­ig­nat­ing 25 crim­i­nal or­ga­ni­za­tions as for­eign ter­ror­ist or­ga­ni­za­tions,” Se­gu­ra said.

He said the move sig­nif­i­cant­ly ad­vances the two coun­tries’ “shared mis­sion to con­front the scourge of nar­co-ter­ror­ism poi­son­ing our com­mu­ni­ties.”
