Police destroy 1,800 marijuana trees in Moruga worth $2.4M

Po­lice de­stroyed ap­prox­i­mate­ly 1,800 cannabis trees with an es­ti­mat­ed street val­ue of $2.43 mil­lion dur­ing an in­tel­li­gence-led op­er­a­tion in Moru­ga on Thurs­day.

Of­fi­cers of the In­ter-Agency Task Force and Ca­nine Unit con­duct­ed the op­er­a­tion be­tween 10 am and 4:30 pm af­ter act­ing on in­tel­li­gence about il­le­gal ac­tiv­i­ty in a forest­ed area at Rock Riv­er Vil­lage.

While search­ing the area, the of­fi­cers dis­cov­ered a trail which led to a large cannabis field.

A makeshift camp was al­so found at the site, along with equip­ment be­lieved to have been used in the cul­ti­va­tion of the cannabis.

The cannabis trees and the makeshift camp were de­stroyed by po­lice.

The op­er­a­tion was sanc­tioned by Deputy Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice Suzette Mar­tin and di­rect­ed by As­sis­tant Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice Hazel. It was spear­head­ed by Se­nior Su­per­in­ten­dent Ram­nar­ine and Su­per­in­ten­dent Ram­sook, and co­or­di­nat­ed by As­sis­tant Su­per­in­ten­dent Singh and Sergeant Bethelmy.

Po­lice said the op­er­a­tion formed part of on­go­ing an­ti-crime ef­forts in the South­ern Di­vi­sion.
