Cricket West Indies (CWI) Chief Executive Officer Chris Dehring has described Sir Garfield Sobers as “the embodiment of West Indies cricket at its finest, bold, brilliant, innovative and unapologetically excellent.” He noted that Sobers’ extraordinary achievements transformed the game and inspired generations of players to dream beyond what had once seemed possible.
CWI has joined Barbados, the wider Caribbean, and the global cricket fraternity in mourning the passing of The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, widely regarded as the greatest all‑round cricketer in history.
Dehring emphasized that Sobers’ life serves as both an inspiration and a responsibility for those entrusted with leading West Indies cricket today. “He established a standard of excellence that continues to define the aspirations of every player who wears the maroon,” he said.
Beyond his records, Sobers was remembered for his humility and approachability. Dehring recalled how children across the Caribbean imitated his distinctive walk, collar turned upwards, even if they could not match his skill. Sobers remained deeply committed to the growth of West Indies cricket, generously sharing his wisdom and encouraging young players throughout his life.
His passing, Dehring said, is “an immeasurable loss, but his legacy is eternal.” He stressed that every generation of cricketers, administrators, and supporters will continue to draw inspiration from Sobers’ example, not only through his accolades but through the dignity and pride with which he represented the Caribbean.
On behalf of Cricket West Indies, Dehring extended condolences to Sobers’ family, the Government and people of Barbados, and cricket fans worldwide. He hailed Sobers as one of the greatest ambassadors the region has ever produced, whose spirit will live on every time a young West Indian dreams of wearing the maroon with distinction.
“May he rest in eternal peace,” Dehring concluded.
