The Judiciary has introduced a Practice Direction governing the use of generative artificial intelligence in court proceedings, aimed at ensuring AI is used responsibly and ethically. Issued by Chief Justice Ronnie Boodoosingh on July 7, the rules took effect on July 8.
They allow AI for limited drafting, research and administrative tasks but require users to verify all facts and legal authorities independently. AI cannot generate evidence or replace judicial or legal judgment. Court users must disclose when AI has been used in preparing documents, while judges may impose sanctions for misuse. The direction also restricts AI use in drafting judgments.
