Debbie-Ann Ottley has made history as the first woman to be elected president of the Banking, Insurance and General Workers Union (BIGWU).

Ottley was elected following the victory of Team Momentum in the union’s elections for the 2026 to 2030 term.

Her election marks a new chapter for BIGWU, with Ottley pledging to focus on stronger representation, improved communication with members and branches, effective collective bargaining and the timely handling of grievances and trade disputes.

Ottley said she accepted the responsibility with humility and a deep sense of duty to BIGWU’s membership.

“Becoming the first female President of this great Union is an honour, but this victory is much bigger than me. It belongs to every member who exercised their right to vote, every woman who has been told that leadership was beyond her reach, and every worker who continues to believe in the power of collective action.”

She said the election was over and the focus must now turn to unity, representation and results for members.

“We campaigned as Team Momentum, but we will govern for all members of BIGWU. Our responsibility is to strengthen this Union, protect the rights and interests of our members, improve the quality and timeliness of our representation, and prepare BIGWU for the changing world of work.”

The incoming Central Executive is also expected to focus on responsible financial management, organisational efficiency, education and training, membership growth and greater use of technology to modernise the union’s operations and services.

Ottley also paid tribute to the leaders, officers, staff, shop stewards and members who helped build BIGWU.

She said Team Momentum’s victory was not the finish line but the beginning of its work, adding that the membership’s confidence must be repaid through service, integrity, accountability and results.

As BIGWU begins its 2026 to 2030 term, Ottley has pledged to lead with courage, fairness and a commitment to workers.
