Maraval woman granted $95,000 bail in ID card forgery case

A 30-year-old Mar­aval woman has been grant­ed bail with sure­ty of $95,000 af­ter ap­pear­ing be­fore a Mas­ter of the High Court charged with three fraud of­fences.

Son­nelle Williams, al­so known as ‘Son­nelle Ma­haraj’, of Sad­dle Road, ap­peared be­fore Mas­ter Abra­ham on Mon­day and was charged with forgery, ut­ter­ing a forged doc­u­ment and at­tempt­ing to ob­tain $85,000 by false pre­tences.

She was grant­ed bail and the mat­ter was post­poned to Feb­ru­ary 10, 2027, for a sta­tus hear­ing.

Williams was al­so or­dered to re­port to the Mar­aval Po­lice Sta­tion once a week be­tween 6 am and 6 pm.

Po­lice said that in Sep­tem­ber 2026, a woman went to a com­mer­cial bank and at­tempt­ed to with­draw $85,000 from an ac­count.

The bank teller be­came sus­pi­cious of the Na­tion­al Iden­ti­fi­ca­tion Card pre­sent­ed by the woman and con­tact­ed the Fraud Squad.

The ID card was sub­se­quent­ly found to be forged, and the woman was ar­rest­ed and charged in con­nec­tion with the mat­ter.

The in­ves­ti­ga­tion was su­per­vised by Snr Supt Jack­man, Supt Lutch­man, ASP Thomas, In­sp Thomas and Sgt Bas­sarath.

Williams was charged by PC Thomas.
