No bail for man charged over Angelica Jogie’s death

The jet ski op­er­a­tor al­leged to have caused the death of sev­en-year-old An­gel­i­ca Jo­gie at Pi­geon Point Beach on April 8 has been de­nied bail.

Ash­worth Bur­nett, 33, of Canaan, To­ba­go, ap­peared be­fore Mas­ter Shah at the Scar­bor­ough Mag­is­trates’ Court on Wednes­day charged with manslaugh­ter.

Bur­nett was re­mand­ed in­to cus­tody and will reap­pear in court on Oc­to­ber 20 for a sta­tus hear­ing.

Po­lice re­ar­rest­ed Bur­nett at his home on Mon­day morn­ing fol­low­ing ad­vice from Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tions Roger Gas­pard, SC, to lay the charge.

He al­leged­ly fled the scene af­ter his jet ski breached the bathing-on­ly zone at Pi­geon Point Her­itage Park and struck An­gel­i­ca and three of her rel­a­tives. The for­mer San Fer­nan­do TML stu­dent died at the Scar­bor­ough Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal.

Her fa­ther, Arnold Jo­gie, told Guardian Me­dia on Mon­day that noth­ing could bring his daugh­ter back to life.
