Former West Indies captain Brian Lara has called on cricket authorities to establish a Sir Garfield Sobers Initiative to inspire a revival of regional cricket, describing it as the most fitting tribute to the man widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder the game has ever produced.

Delivering one of the most emotional tributes at Sir Garfield Sobers' funeral in Barbados today, Lara urged "the powers that be" to seize the moment and create a programme in Sobers' honour so that, when the region celebrates what would have been his 100th birthday in a decade, it could also celebrate a resurgence of West Indies cricket.

"If it's something that I'd like to leave here today... use this opportunity to create a Sir Garfield Sobers Initiative," Lara said. "An initiative that when we come back in 10 years' time to celebrate his 100th birthday, we might be celebrating a true resurgence in West Indies cricket."

Lara said the occasion was not one for sadness but for celebration, describing Sobers' life as one that transformed cricket and inspired generations across the Caribbean and beyond.

"This is not a sad moment. This is a moment for us to celebrate," he said. "Today, we celebrate a remarkable life."

Reflecting on Sobers' influence, Lara described him as more than a sporting icon, calling him a mentor, friend and father figure whose guidance shaped both his career and his character.

"For me, Sir Garry was not just a West Indian sporting hero... He became a personal mentor, a friend and someone whose belief in me shaped my own journey."

Lara recounted several personal stories illustrating Sobers' generosity as a teacher. He recalled meeting him for the first time as a schoolboy in Barbados before later receiving stern advice after scoring 277 in Sydney, with Sobers insisting he had missed the chance to win the match for the West Indies.

He also remembered calling Sobers for batting advice during a difficult period, only for the cricket legend to fly to Jamaica the following day to watch him train. A simple observation that Lara was "not looking at the ball" transformed his approach and restored his confidence.

Lara said Sobers' influence extended well beyond his playing career, noting that he inspired the generation that dominated world cricket for two decades after his retirement.

Ending his tribute, an emotional Lara said: "Sir Garfield Sobers, rest in peace, my mentor, my dad, my friend. Thank you very much."
