Late night release for Star Sabga; placed on house arrest

Busi­ness­woman Star Sab­ga has been re­leased from de­ten­tion at the Women's Prison in Gold­en Grove af­ter spend­ing just over a month at the State fa­cil­i­ty.

Con­fir­ma­tion came late tonight from a se­nior mem­ber of her le­gal team, who told Guardian Me­dia Sab­ga has been re­leased un­der house ar­rest con­di­tions.

The de­vel­op­ment fol­lows a High Court or­der ear­li­er to­day di­rect­ing the re­lease of the 69-year-old cheese­mak­er. The State im­me­di­ate­ly chal­lenged the rul­ing, trig­ger­ing a six-hour stay of the de­ci­sion.

How­ev­er, ac­cord­ing to one at­tor­ney, that stay ex­pired at 11:30 p.m., paving the way for Sab­ga's re­lease.

Sab­ga was ar­rest­ed on June 25, one day af­ter two of her rel­a­tives, busi­ness­man Do­minic Hadeed and his wife, Genevieve Hadeed, were de­tained in con­nec­tion with an al­leged plot to kill Prime Min­is­ter Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar and oth­er se­nior Gov­ern­ment of­fi­cials.

The pre­ven­tive de­ten­tion or­ders (PDOs) is­sued against the Hadeeds were re­voked last week by Min­is­ter of Home­land Se­cu­ri­ty Roger Alexan­der.

Sab­ga, who was at the cen­tre of in­tense pub­lic dis­cus­sion last week­end fol­low­ing the leak of an au­dio record­ing that is now un­der po­lice in­ves­ti­ga­tion, re­mains sub­ject to a pre­ven­tive de­ten­tion or­der. How­ev­er, she will now re­side at her home un­der court-im­posed re­stric­tions pend­ing fur­ther le­gal pro­ceed­ings.
