A Sea Lots man was beaten and killed after he allegedly sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl earlier this week.
Police said the girl was taken to Production Drive, Sea Lots, to stay with a relative on Thursday night.
Shortly after 9:45 pm, the girl was walking to a shop to buy something when she was pulled inside the man's house, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her, before allowing her to leave.
Police said the girl ran to her cousin, who in turn called her mother and reported what happened.
An ambulance was called in and took the child and her mother to the Mt Hope Paediatric Hospital.
While there, officers of the Besson Street Police Station were contacted and visited the hospital, where they interviewed the child in the presence of her mother.
The girl reportedly positively identified the man who raped her.
While at the hospital, police were told that the suspect was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital for injuries sustained during a beating from residents in the neighbourhood.
Police said the man sustained several broken bones but was in stable condition.
When interviewed by police investigators, the man reportedly told officers:
"I ain't touch she. I was just watching her."
However, officers reported that he was unable to be interviewed further due to the extent of his injuries.
Sources later confirmed that the man died at the hospital.
Officers of the Port of Spain Special Victims Unit are continuing enquiries.
