A 27-year-old woman has been shot dead and her companion left critically injured after gunmen blocked their vehicle and opened fire along Malgretoute Road in Princes Town just after midnight.
The dead woman has been identified as Monifer Carrie, 27, of Beetham Gardens, Port of Spain.
Carrie was in a white Nissan Sentra driven by her child’s father, Isaiah Cruickshank, also known as Touchy, 30, of Manahambre Road, Princes Town.
Police said that while proceeding east along Malgretoute Road around 12.05 am, a vehicle exited Manahambre Branch Road onto Malgretoute Road, blocking Cruickshank’s car. Two armed men then exited that vehicle and fired several shots in their direction before returning to their vehicle and speeding off.
A relative ran to the scene and found Carrie on the road. He picked her up, placed her in Cruickshank’s car and conveyed both victims to the Princes Town Health Facility, where Carrie succumbed to her injuries around 12.36 am.
Cruickshank sustained several gunshot wounds and was transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
Officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region Three are continuing investigations.
