Sobers meets U.S. Assistant Secretary of War

Min­is­ter of For­eign and CARI­COM Af­fairs Sean Sobers met with Unit­ed States As­sis­tant Sec­re­tary of War Joseph Hu­mire at the De­part­ment of War in Wash­ing­ton D.C. on Thurs­day as Trinidad and To­ba­go and the Unit­ed States dis­cussed de­fence and se­cu­ri­ty co­op­er­a­tion.

Sobers was ac­com­pa­nied by Per­ma­nent Sec­re­tary and Head of the For­eign Ser­vice Ran­dall Karim dur­ing the meet­ing at the Pen­ta­gon.

Ac­cord­ing to a state­ment, dis­cus­sions fo­cused on strength­en­ing bi­lat­er­al co­op­er­a­tion be­tween the Unit­ed States and Trinidad and To­ba­go, par­tic­u­lar­ly on de­fence and se­cu­ri­ty mat­ters.

The talks al­so cen­tred on en­hanc­ing co­or­di­na­tion be­tween both coun­tries and re­in­forc­ing what of­fi­cials de­scribed as a long­stand­ing part­ner­ship aimed at main­tain­ing re­gion­al sta­bil­i­ty.

Sobers is cur­rent­ly in Wash­ing­ton for a se­ries of high-lev­el bi­lat­er­al meet­ings with se­nior Unit­ed States of­fi­cials.

In a state­ment ear­li­er this week, the Min­istry of For­eign and CARI­COM Af­fairs said the min­is­ter’s en­gage­ments from May 13 to 15 in­clude meet­ings with of­fi­cials from the Unit­ed States De­part­ment of State, the Of­fice of the Unit­ed States Trade Rep­re­sen­ta­tive, the De­part­ment of En­er­gy, the De­part­ment of War and the Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty Coun­cil.
