One man has been arrested and charged following the seizure of more than $1.4 million worth of marijuana in Port of Spain.

The accused appeared before a Master of the High Court and was granted $1.5 million bail with surety and reporting conditions.

The arrest followed an operation by the Customs and Excise Division on Tuesday, when officers intercepted a shipment at a bonded area during a routine cargo examination.

Officers discovered 18 packages of a green plant-like material concealed inside a household appliance. The Preventive Branch responded, and field tests confirmed the substance was cannabis.

Authorities estimated the street value of the seizure at $1,413,302.

The Division said it continues efforts to prevent the importation of illegal narcotics.
