Investigation into missing municipal police firearms

An in­ves­ti­ga­tion is un­der­way to lo­cate three firearms be­long­ing to mu­nic­i­pal po­lice of­fi­cers in the Port-of-Spain Di­vi­sion.

The firearms were re­port­ed­ly dis­cov­ered miss­ing dur­ing an arms check at about 5 am to­day.

The weapons were re­port­ed­ly lodged at Cen­tral Po­lice Sta­tion on St Vin­cent Street, Port-of-Spain, on Mon­day but could not be ac­count­ed for dur­ing an ear­ly morn­ing check.

Se­nior of­fi­cials were re­luc­tant to say the firearms and an un­known quan­ti­ty of am­mu­ni­tion had been stolen, cau­tion­ing that it could have been an “ad­min­is­tra­tive er­ror”.

Of­fi­cials spec­u­lat­ed that the weapons could have been er­ro­neous­ly hand­ed over to se­cu­ri­ty per­son­nel.

They said ex­ten­sive checks were be­ing con­duct­ed to de­ter­mine when the firearms were brought to the sta­tion and who took pos­ses­sion of them af­ter they were hand­ed over.
