Minister of Labour, Small and Micro Enterprise Development, Leroy Baptiste, has reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening workers’ rights and advancing decent work as Trinidad and Tobago marks Labour Day 2026.
In a message commemorating the occasion, Baptiste said Labour Day serves as a moment to honour the dedication, resilience and sacrifices of workers and trade unionists whose efforts secured many of the rights and protections enjoyed today. He noted that their legacy continues to shape national development and inspires ongoing efforts to build a more inclusive and prosperous society.
Baptiste said the Government remains focused on fostering strong partnerships between the State, employers and labour organisations, while modernising labour legislation through the Workers’ Agenda. He added that the agenda was developed in consultation with stakeholders and is aimed at improving working conditions, strengthening workplace protections and ensuring laws reflect the realities of today’s world of work.
The Minister highlighted the passage of the Retrenchment and Severance Benefits (Amendment) Bill in the Senate as a key achievement. He said the legislation enhances consultation and notice requirements, improves severance provisions and strengthens safeguards for workers facing redundancy.
Baptiste also pointed to proposed amendments to the Maternity Protection Act, describing them as part of efforts to support women in the workforce while promoting stronger family wellbeing and greater workplace equity.
He further outlined several ongoing initiatives under the Workers’ Agenda, including proposed changes to the Minimum Wages Act and Industrial Relations Act, research into a living wage framework, and the rollout of a Productivity Ecosystem for Decent Work in partnership with the International Labour Organization. He also cited the expansion of the National Employment Online Network (NEON) and the development of a Labour Market Information System to improve access to job data and career planning tools.
Baptiste commended Ministry officers for their continued work in dispute resolution, labour inspections and advisory services, saying their efforts help maintain industrial harmony.
He extended appreciation to workers, trade unions and employers for their contributions and collaboration, urging continued unity in building a fair and opportunity-driven labour environment.
