Four men were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the theft of electricity cables valued at $186,000.

Police said officers assigned to the Cumuto Police Station received two reports last week concerning the larceny of cables along the Elmina Clarke Highway.

Following the reports, officers conducted a surveillance exercise on September 28 and 29.

On Tuesday, September 29, officers acting on intelligence took up strategic positions along the highway.

Police said shortly afterwards, they observed a black Nissan X-Trail travelling along the roadway with four occupants.

The vehicle was intercepted and searched.

During the search, officers allegedly found an assortment of tools hidden inside the vehicle, including wire cutters, bolt cutters, hacksaw blades, pliers and knives.

The four occupants were arrested.

They were identified as a 25-year-old man from Manzanilla, a 28-year-old man and two 29-year-old men, all from Sangre Grande.

The men remain in police custody as investigations continue into the reported cable thefts.

Police have not disclosed whether the stolen cables were recovered or whether the suspects have been charged.
