The National Action Cultural Committee (NACC) has extended condolences to the family, friends and cultural community following the death of legendary calypsonian Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow.

Sparrow, affectionately known as “The Birdie”, died on Sunday morning, September 27, 2026. He was widely recognised as the Calypso King of the World and spent six decades entertaining audiences in Trinidad and Tobago and internationally.

The NACC said Sparrow’s contribution to calypso went beyond his music, describing him as a leader who consistently advocated for the respect, development and advancement of calypso and other local art forms.

Sparrow first won the National Calypso King Competition in 1956, when he also captured the Road March title.

The following year, he joined other calypsonians in boycotting the competition over disparities in prize money. The NACC noted that the Calypso King’s first prize in 1956 was $40, compared with $7,500 for the Carnival Queen Beauty Contest.

The boycott continued from 1957 to 1959 and eventually contributed to increased prize money for the Calypso King Competition.

Sparrow also ventured into other musical genres, including reggae. His work in the genre led to an invitation to perform at Jamaica’s Reggae Sunsplash festival in 1993.

The holder of the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (ORTT), Sparrow was also recognised internationally for his cultural contribution. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of the West Indies in 1987 and the Order of the Caribbean Community in 2001, CARICOM’s highest honour.

In 1977, he was given the honorary Yoruba title Chief Omo Wale of Ikoyi in Nigeria.

The NACC also highlighted Sparrow’s connection to Petit Valley, where he lived for several years and established Sparrow’s Hideaway Entertainment Centre. The venue became home to Sparrow’s Young Brigade Calypso Tent during the 1980s and served as an entertainment and promotional centre.

The committee said Sparrow’s legacy should live on through his music and the continued development of calypso.
