The Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services has marked a milestone with its 40th Disaster Relief and Home Repair Grant Distribution, providing financial assistance to 70 households in the Tunapuna/Piarco and Arima regions.
The distribution, held on Monday, benefited 223 people through grants totalling TT$936,045. The funding is intended to help vulnerable families recover from disasters and improve housing conditions.
Of the total allocation, 44 Disaster General Assistance Grants worth TT$397,923 were distributed to 142 beneficiaries. A further 26 Home Repair Grants valued at TT$538,122 were awarded to 81 beneficiaries.
Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services Vandana Mohit said the grants represent more than financial assistance, describing them as investments in people and communities.
"The grants we distribute today are not acts of charity. They are investments in people, investments in safer homes, stronger families and more resilient communities. When families receive support during their most difficult moments, they regain the confidence to rebuild and move forward," Mohit said.
The minister said the 40th distribution highlights the Government's commitment to strengthening the country's social protection system while continuing efforts to improve the delivery of assistance.
"Forty distributions, countless lives touched and millions of dollars invested in the people of Trinidad and Tobago. Today's distribution is living proof of this Government's commitment, and we are only getting started," Mohit said.
She added that the ministry would continue clearing application backlogs, modernising social services and ensuring assistance reaches deserving citizens.
Mohit also outlined plans to improve the disaster relief process through the use of digital technology, enhanced assessments and more efficient payment systems.
"We are transforming the way disaster relief is delivered by embracing modern technology, improving transparency and accelerating the delivery of assistance. Our goal is to ensure that help reaches families faster, more efficiently and with greater accountability," she said.
She urged recipients to use the grants for their intended purpose, noting that responsible use of public funds would help ensure the long-term sustainability of programmes supporting vulnerable families.
The ministry said it remains committed to delivering programmes and services aimed at improving the lives of citizens, strengthening communities and ensuring timely assistance reaches individuals and families facing hardship.
