Ian Roach appointed to Judicial and Legal Service Commission

At­tor­ney H. R. Ian Roach has been ap­point­ed a mem­ber of the Ju­di­cial and Le­gal Ser­vice Com­mis­sion (JLSC).

Pres­i­dent Chris­tine Car­la Kan­ga­loo ad­min­is­tered the oath of of­fice and pre­sent­ed Roach with his in­stru­ment of ap­point­ment dur­ing a cer­e­mo­ny at Pres­i­dent’s House on Tues­day.

Roach is an at­tor­ney-at-law with Chancery Cham­bers and cur­rent­ly serves as chair­man of the Equal Op­por­tu­ni­ty Com­mis­sion.

Ac­cord­ing to the Of­fice of the Pres­i­dent, Roach has more than 30 years’ ex­pe­ri­ence in pub­lic and labour law, with ex­per­tise in ne­go­ti­a­tion, me­di­a­tion and lob­by­ing. He has rep­re­sent­ed gov­ern­ments and or­gan­i­sa­tions, in­clud­ing Trinidad and To­ba­go, South Africa and the De­mo­c­ra­t­ic Re­pub­lic of Con­go.

He holds a Bach­e­lor of Arts in His­to­ry and Law and a Bach­e­lor of Laws (Ho­n­ours) from the Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies, Cave Hill, as well as a Le­gal Ed­u­ca­tion Cer­tifi­cate from the Hugh Wood­ing Law School.

Roach pre­vi­ous­ly served as Trinidad and To­ba­go’s Hon­orary Con­sul to South Africa be­tween 1999 and 2005 and was an ad­vis­er to the Chief Pros­e­cu­tor at the In­ter­na­tion­al Crim­i­nal Court in 2006.

Be­tween 2010 and 2023, he presided over sev­er­al courts-mar­tial as Judge Ad­vo­cate for the Trinidad and To­ba­go De­fence Force.

He al­so served as an In­de­pen­dent Sen­a­tor from 2013 to 2016, sit­ting on sev­er­al par­lia­men­tary com­mit­tees, in­clud­ing as chair­man of the Joint Se­lect Com­mit­tee on Lo­cal Au­thor­i­ties, Ser­vice Com­mis­sions and Statu­to­ry Au­thor­i­ties, in­clud­ing the To­ba­go House of As­sem­bly.
