Calling on law enforcement to get a grip on crime, the grieving mother of Nyron Davis yesterday lamented that he was innocent and simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

On the brink of tears, Joycelyn Henry-Davis said her son, a 32-year-old football enthusiast, had gone to Partner’s Bar at the corner of Church Street and the Southern Main Road to watch a FIFA World Cup match on Saturday night.

Reports stated that around 10 pm, he was sitting on a bench in front the bar with another man when they were approached by two men dressed in dark clothing and armed with guns, who opened fire on them.

Davis was struck in the chest and collapsed, while the other man escaped by running away. The gunmen then fled on foot along Church Street. Davis was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital in a private vehicle, where he died while receiving treatment.

Henry-Davis said her son, the youngest of her five children, worked with a contractor as a plumber and was not the intended target.

In an interview with Guardian Media at her La Romaine home, she said her son was caught off guard because he was innocent.

Lamenting the level of gun violence in the country, she said, “Crime is disgusting. In La Romaine too, everybody have a gun and they don’t care who, they get monies, and they just go and shoot up a place. They don’t care who innocent, guilty, children or whoever, they just shooting. My son come and get in that situation. Innocent young man, have a bright future.”

She said neighbours heard the gunshots, but she received the news from her daughter.

Henry-Davis reflected that she recently dreamt about Davis and believes it may have been a warning. In the dream, he looked younger, had a stomach ache and was crying.

“I prayed about it,” she said, but noted she never got the chance to tell him about the dream.

Appealing to the police, she said, “I know they can’t be in one, all places at one time, but there’s so much people with so many guns and they don’t care. Somebody pay them off and they just go and shoot at whoever get caught in the melee. Innocent people are being killed.”

The family is awaiting the results of the autopsy before finalising funeral arrangements.

Officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region Three recovered 11 spent 9mm shell casings at the scene and are continuing investigations.
