A mentally ill man was shot and killed by police on Monday evening after he attacked an officer with a knife.

Police reported that around 6.40 pm Constable Noel and other officers of the San Juan Police Station responded to a call of domestic disturbance at the corners of Concord and Saddle Road, San Juan.

Police said residents at the location were being harassed by the outpatients of the St Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital and called the police.

When the officers arrived, they met a knife-wielding Abraham Hackette who police said was homeless but had a last known address at Farroe Terrace, San Juan.

Police said the 36-year-old attacked the officers and stabbed Noel in the left and upper right arms.

He was subsequently shot and taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, where he was declared dead on arrival.
