THE Opposition UNC is not opposed to the possibility of the Sandals Resort Group investing in a hotel in Tobago.

Party chairman Davendranath Tancoo made this comment on April 7, n response to comments made by Prime Minister Stuart Young at a news conference earlier in the day in Tobago.

He said, "The UNC was never against a Sandals investment in Tobago or anywhere else in the country."

Tancoo added the party's only concern was "the lack of transparency and the lack of open accountability by the government of the of Trinidad and Tobago and the PNM for this project."

The UNC, he continued, welcomes any investment into TT "that will benefit the people of TT."

Tancoo repeated there must be accountability and transparency."

Young said agreement was reached after there was consensus between government, Tobago House of Assembly (THA) and Tobago stakeholders to start over with "a clean slate"and ask Sandals to consider Tobago as a sixth investment for a hotel in the Caribbean.

No conditions have been set regarding a decision to be made on an investment by Sandals in Tobago, including a time frame for such an investment or whether the outcome of the April 28 general election would affect whether the investment happens or not.
