Two arrested; gun and drugs seized in Mayaro operation

A State of Emer­gency an­ti-crime ex­er­cise in Ma­yaro has led to the ar­rest of two peo­ple and the seizure of a firearm, am­mu­ni­tion and cannabis.

Of­fi­cers of the Ma­yaro Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tion De­part­ment, work­ing along­side the Ca­nine Unit, car­ried out the op­er­a­tion dur­ing the ear­ly hours of Sun­day 22 March 2026 un­der the Emer­gency Pow­ers Reg­u­la­tions 2026.

Po­lice ar­rest­ed a 28-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman, both of Bris­tol Vil­lage, Ma­yaro, af­ter they found them in pos­ses­sion of a home­made shot­gun, 50 live rounds and six spent 12-gauge car­tridges. Nei­ther in­di­vid­ual held a valid Firearm User’s Li­cence.

Of­fi­cers al­so ex­tend­ed the ex­er­cise to the Or­toire Fish­ing Port, where a search un­cov­ered a black plas­tic bag con­tain­ing 162 grammes of com­pressed cannabis.

Snr Supt Pa­ponette led the co­or­di­nat­ed op­er­a­tion, with su­per­vi­sion from Sgt Mo­hammed and Cpl Jaikaran.
