Two arrested as 271 rounds of ammunition seized in Couva

Two peo­ple were ar­rest­ed and 271 rounds of am­mu­ni­tion and two ri­fle mag­a­zines were seized dur­ing an an­ti-crime ex­er­cise in Cou­va on Wednes­day.

Ac­cord­ing to a state­ment from the Trinidad and To­ba­go Po­lice Ser­vice (TTPS), of­fi­cers of the Cen­tral Di­vi­sion Task Force Area South act­ed on in­tel­li­gence around 6:50 a.m. con­cern­ing the stor­age of firearms and am­mu­ni­tion at a res­i­dence on June Street, Cou­va.

A par­ty of of­fi­cers went to the res­i­dence, where they en­coun­tered two oc­cu­pants.

The TTPS said a search was con­duct­ed pur­suant to Reg­u­la­tion 12 of the Emer­gency Pow­ers Reg­u­la­tions 2026.

Dur­ing the search, PC Quam­i­na found a green and black bag in a bed­room oc­cu­pied by the two peo­ple.

The bag con­tained two ri­fle mag­a­zines marked 7.62 x 39, along with 201 rounds of 7.62mm am­mu­ni­tion and 70 rounds of 5.56mm am­mu­ni­tion.

The two oc­cu­pants were ar­rest­ed and in­formed that they were be­ing de­tained for pos­ses­sion of a firearm and pos­ses­sion of am­mu­ni­tion.

They were tak­en to the Cou­va Po­lice Sta­tion, where PC Quam­i­na is con­tin­u­ing en­quiries.

The ar­rests and seizure formed part of Op­er­a­tion R.E.S.O.L.U.T.E. Shield, which was con­duct­ed in Area South of the Cen­tral Di­vi­sion be­tween 4:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Sep­tem­ber 16.

The ex­er­cise was co­or­di­nat­ed by ACP Re­my, Se­nior Su­per­in­ten­dent Bhag­wan­deen, ASP Har­riper­sad and Act­ing In­spec­tor Ram­per­sad.

It was led and su­per­vised by Sgt Samuel, Cpls Dun­can and Joseph, along with of­fi­cers of the Cen­tral Di­vi­sion Task Force Area South.
