The Tobago House of Assembly has assured the public that the island remains safe amid the state of emergency declared by the government today.
In a media release, the THA referred to the reasons given by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar for calling the SoE, but said Tobago has been experiencing low levels of serious and organised crime. It added that, according to local law enforcement and national security partners, there is no evidence of the escalation of any gang activity or coordinated crime on the island.
“The THA remains in active communication with the TT Police Service and relevant national security agencies to ensure the implementation of any measures within Tobago remains proportionate, intelligence-led, and responsive to the island’s specific security context. Our priority is to preserve public safety while minimising unnecessary disruption to lawful economic and social activity.”
The THA encouraged residents and visitors to continue their normal activities while remaining vigilant and cooperative with instructions from the protective services. The THA said it will continue to monitor developments closely and will keep the public informed of any matters directly affecting Tobago.
“The safety and well-being of our people remain paramount,” it said.
Tobago has recorded just one murder for 2026.
