Son charged with father’s murder

A 41-one-year-old man of Bar­rack­pore has been charged with manslaugh­ter in re­la­tion to the death of 63-year-old Ramesh Lall­be­har­ry.

Po­lice said Bran­don Lal­be­har­ry, a labour­er of Has­sanali Trace, South Low­er Bar­rack­pore, was charged on last Wednes­day fol­low­ing ad­vice from Deputy Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tions (Ag.) Sub­ri­na Dougdeen-Jaglal. The charge was laid by Cor­po­ral Hug­gins of the Bar­rack­pore Po­lice Sta­tion.

Ac­cord­ing to in­ves­ti­ga­tors, the in­ci­dent oc­curred on Wednes­day De­cem­ber 31, 2025, at about 3.00 pm, at a res­i­dence in Has­sanali Trace South, Low­er Bar­rack­pore. Po­lice said Ramesh Lall­be­har­ry was at­tend­ing a fam­i­ly gath­er­ing at his home, where he lived with the ac­cused and oth­er rel­a­tives.

Dur­ing the gath­er­ing, an ar­gu­ment re­port­ed­ly took place be­tween the de­ceased and the ac­cused. Po­lice said Ramesh Lall­be­har­ry was lat­er seen walk­ing to­wards the back of the house. Mo­ments lat­er, he was found ly­ing on the ground in a se­mi-con­scious state and vom­it­ing be­neath a co­conut tree.

Rel­a­tives trans­port­ed him to the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal, where he was ad­mit­ted for med­ical treat­ment. He re­mained ward­ed un­til Tues­day Jan­u­ary 6, 2026, when he died.

The mat­ter was re­ferred to the Of­fice of the Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tions, which re­sult­ed in a rec­om­men­da­tion for the ac­cused to be charged with manslaugh­ter.

Bran­don Lal­be­har­ry ap­peared be­fore Mas­ter Dele­cia Bethelmy at the South Crim­i­nal Court “C” on Thurs­day Jan­u­ary 22, 2026. The mat­ter was ad­journed to Fri­day June 12, 2026, for a sta­tus hear­ing, while a suf­fi­cien­cy hear­ing was set for Wednes­day Sep­tem­ber 30, 2026.

The ac­cused was grant­ed bail with sure­ty in the sum of $400,000 and was warned not to com­mu­ni­cate with pros­e­cu­tion wit­ness­es.

In­ves­ti­ga­tions were led by De­tec­tive Sergeant Bridge­mo­han un­der the su­per­vi­sion of As­sis­tant Su­per­in­ten­dent Anil Ma­haraj of the Homi­cide Bu­reau of In­ves­ti­ga­tions, Re­gion Three.
