A police officer was shot and injured during a patrol in Tunapuna on Monday night.
Police said officers attached to the Northern Division were on mobile patrol along Maingot and Fairley Streets around 8 pm when they responded to a report of assault.
While interviewing the victim, a suspect armed with a high-powered rifle opened fire on the police vehicle, hitting one of the officers in the right leg.
The officer’s leg was broken and he also sustained other gunshot injuries.
A civilian also was shot during the incident.
The injured officer and the civilian were taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope for treatment.
Another officer discharged several rounds during the incident.
