Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday continued to heap praise on this country’s law enforcement officials, even as criticisms mount following the fatal police-involved shooting of Joshua Samaroo.
Emotions have been high after news broke last Thursday that Samaroo’s partner, Kaia Sealy, is facing charges, including manslaughter, arising out of the January 20 encounter with police.
In a post on her social media platforms yesterday, she stated, “GOD BLESS OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS.”
In the post, she attached a video of news reports on the court appearance of relatives of Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles back in 2014. Beckles’ relatives were held for gun and ammunition possession without the required licence and documentation.
The Prime Minister said that when she saw this clip, she was reminded of two sayings.
“The first was: ‘The most evil among us always expect the rest of us to live by morals that they themselves do not possess.”
“The second was: ‘People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”
She added, “May God bless and protect our law enforcement officers as they leave their families every day to protect law-abiding citizens from violent criminals armed with illegal high-powered firearms.”
