A Petit Valley man has been charged with several counts of assaulting police officers following an incident in Arouca on Friday night.

Police said officers were on patrol along the Eastern Main Road when they noticed a man wearing black pants and a single black sock on his right foot while cursing at people.

The officers approached the man and warned him about his behaviour, but he responded by cursing at them.

One of the officers attempted to arrest the man by placing his hands behind his back. However, he pulled away.

Other officers then tried to subdue him, but the man kicked and punched several officers, striking a Woman Police Constable (WPC) on her right hand.

Another officer was struck on the head and hand and was bitten on his left ankle.

Police eventually overpowered the man and took him to the Arouca Police Station.

The officers later went to a health facility for treatment, where it was determined that the WPC sustained a fractured hand, while another officer suffered a fractured arm.

Two other officers were also treated for chest injuries.
