A 24-year-old man was shot and killed during a confrontation with police near a bar along Morne Coco Road, Maraval, on Friday night, making the incident the third police-involved fatal shooting within a 24-hour period.
Police identified the deceased as Kyle Harewood of Le Platte Village.
According to police, around 10.47 pm on Friday, officers were responding to reports of a man dressed in dark clothing who was said to be armed with a firearm in the vicinity of a bar.
Police claimed they observed Harewood running along a track near the bar while holding what appeared to be a black, “L”-shaped metal object resembling a firearm.
Officers said they ordered him to stop, but he continued running and was chased into an unfinished concrete structure, where he attempted to hide.
Officers claimed that Harewood later pointed the object in their direction, causing them to fear for their lives. Police said officers then opened fire on Harewood.
He was taken to the St James Infirmary, where he later died while receiving medical treatment.
Investigators reported that a firearm, along with ammunition, was recovered at the scene. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The shooting occurred just hours after two men were shot and killed earlier on Friday during a police sting operation in Mt Hope.
In that incident, officers from the North Central Division encountered four men who attempted to rob them while they posed as Facebook Marketplace buyers. A third man was injured and taken to the hospital, while a fourth suspect fled the scene.
