One man was arrested and a firearm and ammunition were seized during an operation in Laventille on Friday January 30, 2026.
Police said officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force were investigating a report of wounding by shooting at Village Council Street, Laventille, around 5:10 pm, when they received information about explosions in another area of the district.
Officers proceeded to that location to conduct enquiries. On arrival, they observed a male running from the area with a bag. Officers pursued the suspect and detained him after a chase.
Police said a search of the bag led to the discovery of one firearm and one magazine containing 30 rounds of ammunition. The items were seized as part of the investigation.
The suspect, a 21-year-old man of Morvant, was arrested in connection with the find. He remains in police custody as investigations continue.
The initial report of wounding by shooting is also under investigation. Police did not provide information on any injured persons or the status of any victim.
The exercise formed part of ongoing operations in the Laventille district involving officers assigned to joint patrols and response duties.
Police said the operation was led by DCP Martin and involved ACP Hazel, Snr. Supt. Ramnarine, Supt. Ramsook, ASP Morales, ASP Singh and Insp. Matas.
The Inter-Agency Task Force includes officers from multiple divisions and units who work together on patrols, investigations and response to reports involving firearms and violent offences.
Police urged members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement by reporting information related to illegal firearms and criminal activity.
