Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is demanding that the PM release the legal opinion which he says supports the appointment of Energy and Energy Industries Minister Stuart Young as PM.

In a WhatsApp message sent to media on March 14, Persad-Bissessar said the UNC firmly believed Young’s appointment would be illegal once Dr Rowley remained as PNM political leader.

“Only if Rowley simultaneously steps down as leader of the PNM and Prime Minister, would the appointment of Young be constitutional. It is an insult to the country that Young, who was not even elected as leader of his own party, is being undemocratically foisted on the population.”

She said Young’s appointment was an act of gross ingratitude and betrayal towards PNM rank-and-file members who loyally supported Rowley for over 40 years.

“He has wickedly betrayed the members and took away their right to select a leader of their choice. Had there been a PNM internal election, it’s a fact that Young would have been decimated by Penelope Beckles.”

“The anointing of Stuart Young as the unelected illegitimate prime minister of TT is a coup that was backed by Young’s financiers in connection with Rowley. Rowley cannot sink any lower, he has sold the country to Stuart Young’s daddy and his financiers.”

Persad-Bissessar said Young’s appointment was also an act of betrayal against the electorate.

“Any actions taken by Young as prime minister if his appointment goes through in the way Rowley is proceeding would be illegal and invalid. Young should have some shame, he is fully aware that the country knows he didn’t earn the position through competence and hard work.

“The Prime Minister must dissolve the Parliament and call the election. Let the people decide who they want to lead them.”
