The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service has issued a yellow level hazardous seas alert for northern exposed coastlines of Trinidad and Tobago, including north-facing coastlines of the Gulf of Paria to a lesser extent.
The alert takes effect from 5 am tomorrow and runs until 9 am on February 28.
In a public warning issued at 1.20 pm today, the TTMS said high-energy, long period northerly swells are expected to produce large breakers along nearshore northern coastal areas.
The advisory warned that the event can cause large, battering waves, exacerbated at high tides, along these shorelines. Nearshore activities, including fishing, swimming and boat moorings, can be disrupted.
Impacts may also include intrusion of salt water and displacement of sand, further than the average reach point.
The TTMS urged all marine interests to monitor nearshore sea conditions and exercise extra caution along affected coasts. It advised the public to limit nearshore marine activities and continue to monitor updates from official sites at www.metoffice.gov.tt and www.odpm.gov.tt.
