Grande teen charged; villagers thwart home invasion attempt

An 18-year-old San­gre Grande man is ex­pect­ed to ap­pear be­fore a mag­is­trate to­day to an­swer three crim­i­nal charges, the most re­cent be­ing home in­va­sion, af­ter res­i­dents of Ve­ga de Oropouche cap­tured him.

Po­lice said the sus­pect, from Damarie Hill, to­geth­er with two masked men, one of whom was armed with a knife, con­front­ed a 48-year-old man at his home on Ram­per­sad Trace, Ve­ga de Oropouche, on Jan­u­ary 23.

The home­own­er fought back against one of the ban­dits, whose mask fell off dur­ing the scuf­fle.

The ban­dits fled the home along a near­by track but were chased by vil­lagers, who caught a man be­lieved to be one of the ban­dits and tied his legs with rope be­fore po­lice ar­rived.

He was tak­en to the San­gre Grande Hos­pi­tal for in­juries sus­tained dur­ing the scuf­fle with vil­lagers.

Sources said of­fi­cers made mul­ti­ple at­tempts to ob­tain a state­ment about his beat­ing by vil­lagers, but he re­port­ed­ly re­fused.

Of­fi­cers of the San­gre Grande CID charged the sus­pect with home in­va­sion on Sun­day.

On Sat­ur­day, of­fi­cers al­so charged him with rob­bery with ag­gra­va­tion for a sep­a­rate in­ci­dent on Jan­u­ary 18 and house­break­ing and lar­ce­ny for an in­ci­dent on Ju­ly 15, 2025.
