Gasparillo man charged with 2022 double murder

A Gas­par­il­lo man has ap­peared be­fore a Mas­ter of the High Court charged with a 2022 dou­ble mur­der.

Labour­er Rhanasa Sama­roo, 27, al­so faces charges of pos­ses­sion of firearm and pos­ses­sion of am­mu­ni­tion. He ap­peared be­fore Mas­ter Deli­cia Bethelmy in the High Court on Mon­day.

The court set a suf­fi­cien­cy hear­ing for Oc­to­ber 15.

The charges re­late to the deaths of Joshua Williams, 36, and Anand Ma­habir, 39. Their bod­ies were found in Har­mo­ny Hall on Ju­ly 11, 2022.

Po­lice said one sus­pect was held fol­low­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions by of­fi­cers of the Homi­cide Bu­reau of In­ves­ti­ga­tions Re­gion Three. The in­ves­ti­ga­tion was su­per­vised by Supt Per­sad and In­sp Teeluck.

PC Shawn Lall of Homi­cide Bu­reau of In­ves­ti­ga­tions Re­gion Three laid the charges on March 14, 2026. Po­lice said the charges fol­lowed ad­vice from Act­ing Deputy Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tions on the same date.

Sama­roo ap­peared in court and was in­formed of the charges. The mat­ter was ad­journed to the date set for the suf­fi­cien­cy hear­ing.

Po­lice said the in­ves­ti­ga­tion in­to the in­ci­dent be­gan af­ter the dis­cov­ery of the bod­ies in Har­mo­ny Hall. Of­fi­cers con­tin­ued en­quiries which led to the ar­rest of the ac­cused.

The case will con­tin­ue be­fore the High Court.
