Four arrested as police seize guns, drugs in anti-crime exercises

Four peo­ple were ar­rest­ed and two firearms, am­mu­ni­tion and quan­ti­ties of nar­cotics seized dur­ing a se­ries of an­ti-crime ex­er­cis­es car­ried out by po­lice in the North Cen­tral and South­ern Di­vi­sions overnight.

Ac­cord­ing to a me­dia re­lease, of­fi­cers at­tached to the North Cen­tral Di­vi­sion Task Force con­duct­ed an op­er­a­tion in the Champ Fleurs dis­trict be­tween 10 p.m. on Mon­day and 1 a.m. on Tues­day.

Dur­ing a search of an aban­doned con­crete struc­ture, of­fi­cers dis­cov­ered a Tau­rus re­volver along with one round of am­mu­ni­tion.

The op­er­a­tion was spear­head­ed by Se­nior Su­per­in­ten­dent Gift and Su­per­in­ten­dent Jaikaran and co­or­di­nat­ed by ASPs Bharath and Pierre.

Mean­while, of­fi­cers in the South­ern Di­vi­sion car­ried out ex­er­cis­es in the San Fer­nan­do and La Ro­main dis­tricts which led to sev­er­al ar­rests and seizures.

Po­lice said a 38-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, both of La Ro­main, were ar­rest­ed for pos­ses­sion of a ri­fle fit­ted with a mag­a­zine con­tain­ing ten rounds of am­mu­ni­tion.

In a sep­a­rate in­ci­dent, a 70-year-old woman of La Ro­main was de­tained af­ter of­fi­cers al­leged­ly found a quan­ti­ty of co­caine in her pos­ses­sion.

A 53-year-old man from San Fer­nan­do was al­so ar­rest­ed for pos­ses­sion of cannabis.

Of­fi­cers al­so con­duct­ed a search of a bushy area along Pa­pourie Road, Es­per­ance Vil­lage, where they dis­cov­ered more than one kilo­gramme of cannabis hid­den among the veg­e­ta­tion.

The ex­er­cis­es formed part of on­go­ing an­ti-crime op­er­a­tions aimed at tar­get­ing il­le­gal firearms, am­mu­ni­tion and nar­cotics across sev­er­al po­lice di­vi­sions.

Po­lice did not dis­close whether charges had yet been laid against the sus­pects up to Tues­day morn­ing, but in­ves­ti­ga­tions in­to the in­ci­dents are con­tin­u­ing.
