The murder toll continued to climb following the death of a Diego Martin man on Wednesday.

Elijah Williams, 33, of Cizan Trace, Blue Basin Road, was said to have been standing on a riverbank north of his house when two gunmen emerged from the water and began shooting at him.

Reports indicate the victim had been preparing to take a bath at the time.

Williams ran towards the back of his house after being hit, where he collapsed in some bushes. The suspects ran back into the river and later got into a silver AD wagon waiting along the nearby roadway.

Relatives living nearby who rushed out after hearing the gunshots found Williams bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds.

He died at the scene.

Eight spent 9 mm shell casings were recovered by police.

In an unrelated incident, a 35-year-old suspect wanted in connection with several crimes was shot by police during his arrest in Point Fortin on Wednesday.

Police said around 5.30 am, officers of the San Fernando Enquiries Unit went to Fortune Road, Egypt Village, Point Fortin, after receiving credible information that the suspect was at a house in the area.

Upon seeing the officers, the suspect reportedly jumped through a window and pointed an object resembling a gun at them. One of the officers fired two shots, hitting the suspect, who fell to the ground. He later got up and ran into nearby bushes.

Police cordoned off and searched the area, where they found a revolver containing five brass cylindrical objects at the spot where the suspect fell. A search of the house, conducted in the presence of the suspect’s common-law wife, led to the discovery of three rounds of 9mm ammunition inside a black-and-white glove in a chest of drawers. She was arrested.

With the assistance of the South Western Division Task Force, a manhunt was launched, and around 6.45 pm, officers found the suspect hiding in an outdoor toilet at Hercules Avenue in Egypt Village.

The suspect, who was bleeding from gunshot wounds to his right forearm, was taken to the Point Fortin Hospital for treatment.

Police said the suspect is wanted for several robberies and shooting offences in the Southern Division and is expected to be placed on identification parades. The suspect also lives at Harmony Hall, Gasparillo.
