A DG Homes machine operator was shot and killed after leaving a cabin at a Matura resort to get ice early on Monday night, as gunmen continue targeting people linked to slain businessman Danny Guerra.

Police said 34-year-old Rondell Adolphus, also known as “Patch”, left the cabin around 9.50 pm when he was ambushed and shot multiple times.

Patrons reported hearing gunfire and ran for cover. On checking, they found Adolphus’ body. No one else was injured.

A district medical officer was called and declared him dead at the scene.

Investigators recovered ten spent .223 shell casings and five spent 9 mm shell casings.

Police said Adolphus worked as a machine operator for DG Homes, the company owned by Sangre Grande businessman Danny Guerra, who was gunned down on March 13 at his office in Vega de Oropouche.

Police sources said Adolphus was among employees previously detained with Guerra under a Prevention Detention Order.

Since Guerra’s killing, relatives, employees and associates have been living in fear amid a series of attacks. Gunmen recently riddled his son’s home in a gated community in Vega de Oropouche with bullets while it was unoccupied.

Residents and associates say the violence has effectively forced them into a state of self-imprisonment, with many afraid to leave their homes.

Senior officers, including personnel from the Matura Police Station, CID, EDTF and the Region II Homicide Bureau of Investigations, visited the scene. Adolphus’ body was ordered removed to the Sangre Grande Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

No motive has been established for the killing, but investigators are probing possible reprisal attacks.

Community members have expressed concern about escalating violence in Sangre Grande and are calling on Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro and Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander to address the situation.

Officers of the Region II Homicide Bureau of Investigations are continuing enquiries.
