The murder of a Port-of-Spain man on Sunday night, metres away from the Duncan Street Police Post, has been labelled a gang- related incident.

The victim was identified as labourer Hakim “Dada Sixx” O’Brien, 25, of Rudolph Charles Link Road, Laventille; and Lovell Place, East Dry River, Port-of-Spain.

The shooting around 6:15 pm also left a 28-year-old man of Clifton Street, Leau Place Laventille, nursing injuries at hospital. A 21-year-old man who was with the other two men escaped unharmed.

Officers on duty at the Duncan Street Police Post heard loud explosions near Prince and Duncan Streets on Sunday and arrived to find O’Brien lying on the road in a pool of blood.

Reports indicate O’Brien had been driving his black Kia Cerato east along Prince Street, with two other people inside, when their car was blocked by the gunmen’s black Suzuki Vitara as they attempted to turn onto Piccadilly Street.

O’Brien attempted to reverse and crashed into the bridge at the corner of Prince and Piccadilly Streets. He ran out the vehicle in an attempt to escape but was pursued by four assailants who opened fire on him.

The suspects then escape on foot along Piccadilly Street before turning onto Jackson Place and disappearing behind the Mango Rose Apartments. Their vehicle was found abandoned at the corner of Piccadilly and Prince Streets.

Officers recovered an iPhone and one rifle with a magazine containing 20 rounds of 7.62 calibre ammunition in the back seat of the vehicle.

A video captured by a resident’s private home security camera showed several of the suspects running away from the scene.

This latest killing pushed the toll for the year to 32.
