Cop shot in armed confrontation in La Romaine

A po­lice of­fi­cer is in in­ten­sive care af­ter be­ing shot while re­spond­ing to a re­port of an armed man at Turn­ing Point along La For­tune Road, La Ro­maine, on Sat­ur­day morn­ing.

PC Alex Koon Koon, at­tached to the Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tions De­part­ment, was wound­ed af­ter a sus­pect al­leged­ly opened fire on of­fi­cers short­ly af­ter they ar­rived at the scene. He was tak­en to the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal, where he un­der­went emer­gency surgery.

Up to late morn­ing, Koon Koon was list­ed in sta­ble con­di­tion and re­mained ward­ed in the In­ten­sive Care Unit. Doc­tors are ex­pect­ed to keep him se­dat­ed for at least 24 hours as he con­tin­ues to be mon­i­tored.

A sus­pect is in po­lice cus­tody, while of­fi­cers con­tin­ued search­ing the area for the firearm be­lieved to have been used.

Calls have al­so been made for blood do­na­tions. Koon Koon re­quires six pints and is O pos­i­tive.
