Police seized illegal contraband during a joint intelligence-led exercise at the Women’s Prison, Golden Grove, Arouca this morning.
The operation was conducted between 1.15 a.m. and 3.00 a.m. and was coordinated by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service. It was carried out under the direction of Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro, Commissioner (Ag) of Prisons Corraspe, and Deputy Commissioner of Police Suzette Martin.
The exercise involved an all-female search team comprising officers from the DCP Operations Team, the Special Intelligence Unit, the Northern Division including North Central and Northern North, the National Emergency Division, and members of the Prison Emergency Response Unit. The team was supported by personnel from the Guard and Emergency Branch.
The operation focused on female inmates suspected of coordinating criminal activity outside the prison while incarcerated. During the searches, three inmates were found to have concealed cellular phones internally. One cellular phone was recovered at the prison.
The remaining two inmates were referred for medical examination. Officers also recovered an additional cellular phone from another cell. Other items considered to be of evidential value were also discovered during the exercise.
Enquiries are continuing by the DCP Operations Team. Police said charges are expected to be laid against the inmates involved.
