Contraband seized during operation at Women’s Prison

Po­lice seized il­le­gal con­tra­band dur­ing a joint in­tel­li­gence-led ex­er­cise at the Women’s Prison, Gold­en Grove, Arou­ca this morn­ing.

The op­er­a­tion was con­duct­ed be­tween 1.15 a.m. and 3.00 a.m. and was co­or­di­nat­ed by the Trinidad and To­ba­go Po­lice Ser­vice and the Trinidad and To­ba­go Prison Ser­vice. It was car­ried out un­der the di­rec­tion of Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice Al­lis­ter Gue­var­ro, Com­mis­sion­er (Ag) of Pris­ons Cor­raspe, and Deputy Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice Suzette Mar­tin.

The ex­er­cise in­volved an all-fe­male search team com­pris­ing of­fi­cers from the DCP Op­er­a­tions Team, the Spe­cial In­tel­li­gence Unit, the North­ern Di­vi­sion in­clud­ing North Cen­tral and North­ern North, the Na­tion­al Emer­gency Di­vi­sion, and mem­bers of the Prison Emer­gency Re­sponse Unit. The team was sup­port­ed by per­son­nel from the Guard and Emer­gency Branch.

The op­er­a­tion fo­cused on fe­male in­mates sus­pect­ed of co­or­di­nat­ing crim­i­nal ac­tiv­i­ty out­side the prison while in­car­cer­at­ed. Dur­ing the search­es, three in­mates were found to have con­cealed cel­lu­lar phones in­ter­nal­ly. One cel­lu­lar phone was re­cov­ered at the prison.

The re­main­ing two in­mates were re­ferred for med­ical ex­am­i­na­tion. Of­fi­cers al­so re­cov­ered an ad­di­tion­al cel­lu­lar phone from an­oth­er cell. Oth­er items con­sid­ered to be of ev­i­den­tial val­ue were al­so dis­cov­ered dur­ing the ex­er­cise.

En­quiries are con­tin­u­ing by the DCP Op­er­a­tions Team. Po­lice said charges are ex­pect­ed to be laid against the in­mates in­volved.
