Barataria man held with illegal firearm

A Barataria man was ar­rest­ed on Fri­day af­ter he was found with an il­le­gal firearm.

Po­lice said the 30-year-old of Sawmill Av­enue was held dur­ing Op­er­a­tion Steady Guard, which was con­duct­ed by of­fi­cers in the Mor­vant dis­trict be­tween 5 pm and 9 pm.

Spear­head­ed by Snr Supt Claire Guy-Al­leyne, Supt Birch and ASP Cal­len­der, mem­bers of the Mor­vant CID, Mor­vant Charge Room, Barataria CID, Barataria Charge Room and the North East­ern Di­vi­sion Task Force went to the sus­pect’s house around 6:25 pm, where they car­ried out a search and re­cov­ered one black 9-mil­lime­tre Bersa Thun­der 9 Ul­tra Com­pact Pro pis­tol and 13 rounds of 9-mil­lime­tre am­mu­ni­tion.

The sus­pect, who is not the hold­er of a Firearm User’s Li­cence (FUL), was ar­rest­ed and tak­en to the Mor­vant Po­lice Sta­tion.

A sec­ondary search of an­oth­er prop­er­ty be­long­ing to a 21-year-old bar­ber, al­so of Sawmill Av­enue, was car­ried out, but noth­ing il­le­gal was found.

The homes of two pri­or­i­ty of­fend­ers at Sev­enth Av­enue and Sec­ond Street, Mal­ick, Barataria, al­so were searched, but of­fi­cers left emp­ty-hand­ed.

Mean­while, po­lice ar­rest­ed six oth­er peo­ple and seized sev­er­al quan­ti­ties of am­mu­ni­tion and nar­cotics dur­ing ex­er­cis­es con­duct­ed on Fri­day.
