T&T, Ghana sign air services agreement

Prime Min­is­ter Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar and Ghana­ian Pres­i­dent John Dra­mani Ma­hama have signed an Air Ser­vices Agree­ment aimed at strength­en­ing air links be­tween Trinidad and To­ba­go and Africa.

The agree­ment was signed dur­ing bi­lat­er­al talks in New York on the side­lines of the 81st Ses­sion of the Unit­ed Na­tions Gen­er­al As­sem­bly.

Ac­cord­ing to the Of­fice of the Prime Min­is­ter, the two lead­ers al­so dis­cussed trade and in­vest­ment, air trans­porta­tion and repa­ra­tions.

The Gov­ern­ment did not im­me­di­ate­ly pro­vide de­tails on po­ten­tial routes, air­lines or when new air ser­vices could be­gin.

The agree­ment is ex­pect­ed to cre­ate op­por­tu­ni­ties for greater air con­nec­tiv­i­ty and co­op­er­a­tion be­tween Trinidad and To­ba­go, Ghana and the wider African con­ti­nent.

The talks on repa­ra­tions come as Caribbean and African coun­tries con­tin­ue dis­cus­sions on the is­sue and ef­forts to strength­en ties be­tween the two re­gions.

Per­sad-Bisses­sar ar­rived in New York on Sun­day for a se­ries of diplo­mat­ic en­gage­ments ahead of the Gen­er­al De­bate at the UN Gen­er­al As­sem­bly.

She is ex­pect­ed to de­liv­er Trinidad and To­ba­go’s na­tion­al state­ment at around 6 p.m. to­day.

The Prime Min­is­ter is ac­com­pa­nied by For­eign and Cari­com Af­fairs Min­is­ter Sean Sobers, Min­is­ter in the Of­fice of the Prime Min­is­ter Nicholas Mor­ris and Head of the Pub­lic Ser­vice Natasha Bar­row.

Her vis­it comes ahead of Trinidad and To­ba­go as­sum­ing a non-per­ma­nent seat on the Unit­ed Na­tions Se­cu­ri­ty Coun­cil in Jan­u­ary 2027 for the 2027–2028 term.

Per­sad-Bisses­sar is ex­pect­ed to leave New York on Thurs­day, Re­pub­lic Day, af­ter com­plet­ing her en­gage­ments.
