A St James man is in police custody after he and others tried rob the Maraval branch of Burger King on Friday night.
Police said three men walked into the restaurant at Royal Palm Plaza, Saddle Road, at around 10.56 pm and ordered workers to lie on the floor as they brandished a gun.
The bandits then stole money from the cash register, placing it in a cardboard box before leaving the business place.
At the same time, an officer assigned to the Port-of-Spain CID was driving his personal vehicle on the nearby Saddle Road and saw one of the bandits holding a gun and walking with the cardboard box filled with cash.
The officer confronted ths bandit, by identifying himself as a police officer.
The bandit, police said, shot at the officer who took cover and returned fire.
The bandit dropped the box and escaped as his accomplice was captured at the scene.
Crime scene investigators found 11 spent 9mm shells.
The stolen cash—TT$1,260 and US$9—was recovered.
