Cop foils robbery at Burger King in Maraval

A St James man is in po­lice cus­tody af­ter he and oth­ers tried rob the Mar­aval branch of Burg­er King on Fri­day night.

Po­lice said three men walked in­to the restau­rant at Roy­al Palm Plaza, Sad­dle Road, at around 10.56 pm and or­dered work­ers to lie on the floor as they bran­dished a gun.

The ban­dits then stole mon­ey from the cash reg­is­ter, plac­ing it in a card­board box be­fore leav­ing the busi­ness place.

At the same time, an of­fi­cer as­signed to the Port-of-Spain CID was dri­ving his per­son­al ve­hi­cle on the near­by Sad­dle Road and saw one of the ban­dits hold­ing a gun and walk­ing with the card­board box filled with cash.

The of­fi­cer con­front­ed ths ban­dit, by iden­ti­fy­ing him­self as a po­lice of­fi­cer.

The ban­dit, po­lice said, shot at the of­fi­cer who took cov­er and re­turned fire.

The ban­dit dropped the box and es­caped as his ac­com­plice was cap­tured at the scene.

Crime scene in­ves­ti­ga­tors found 11 spent 9mm shells.

The stolen cash—TT$1,260 and US$9—was re­cov­ered.
