Five academics from The University of the West Indies’ St Augustine Campus have been promoted to the rank of Professor, as part of a wider round of promotions across the regional institution.
The University of the West Indies has promoted eight senior lecturers to the rank of Professor, recognising excellence in research, teaching and public service across a range of disciplines.
Among the newly appointed professors are four academics from the St Augustine Campus, Professor Jeannine Remy in Music, Professor Karla Georges in Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, Professor Theodor Tudoroiu in International Relations and Professor Preeya Mohan in Environment and Development Economics. Former St Augustine academic Dr Nelleen Baboolal was also retroactively promoted to Professor of Psychiatry, effective May 17, 2023.
The other promotions include Professor Michael Campbell of the Cave Hill Campus in Psychology and Global Health, Professor Nagarani Ponakala of the Mona Campus in Applied Mathematics and Professor Nadine McCloud of the Mona Campus in Applied Econometrics.
The appointments, which took effect on March 12, 2026, followed reviews by internal and external assessors of the candidates’ research, publications and professional contributions.
In a statement, The UWI said the professors have made significant contributions in fields ranging from mental health and climate finance to steelpan scholarship, veterinary public health, development economics and international relations.
Brief bios
Professor Jeannine Remy (St Augustine) – A music scholar and arranger recognised internationally for her contributions to steelpan performance, composition and research.
Professor Karla Georges (St Augustine) – A veterinary epidemiologist whose work focuses on zoonotic diseases, food safety and the One Health approach linking animal, human and environmental health.
Professor Theodor Tudoroiu (St Augustine) – An international relations scholar known for research on geopolitics, development and China’s role in the Global South.
Professor Preeya Mohan (St Augustine) – A development economist whose research examines climate change, economic resilience and policy challenges facing Small Island Developing States.
Professor Michael Campbell (Cave Hill) – A psychologist and global mental health researcher specialising in mental health in Small Island Developing States.
Professor Nagarani Ponakala (Mona) – An applied mathematician whose research focuses on fluid dynamics and biomedical modelling.
Professor Nadine McCloud (Mona) – An economist recognised for her work in econometrics, macroeconomics and development policy.
Professor Nelleen Baboolal (St Augustine, retired) – A psychiatrist whose research on dementia and ageing has helped shape mental health policy in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean
