Five UWI St Augustine academics among eight promoted to professors

Five aca­d­e­mics from The Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies’ St Au­gus­tine Cam­pus have been pro­mot­ed to the rank of Pro­fes­sor, as part of a wider round of pro­mo­tions across the re­gion­al in­sti­tu­tion.

The Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies has pro­mot­ed eight se­nior lec­tur­ers to the rank of Pro­fes­sor, recog­nis­ing ex­cel­lence in re­search, teach­ing and pub­lic ser­vice across a range of dis­ci­plines.

Among the new­ly ap­point­ed pro­fes­sors are four aca­d­e­mics from the St Au­gus­tine Cam­pus, Pro­fes­sor Jean­nine Re­my in Mu­sic, Pro­fes­sor Kar­la Georges in Vet­eri­nary Pub­lic Health and Epi­demi­ol­o­gy, Pro­fes­sor Theodor Tu­doroiu in In­ter­na­tion­al Re­la­tions and Pro­fes­sor Preeya Mo­han in En­vi­ron­ment and De­vel­op­ment Eco­nom­ics. For­mer St Au­gus­tine aca­d­e­m­ic Dr Nelleen Ba­boolal was al­so retroac­tive­ly pro­mot­ed to Pro­fes­sor of Psy­chi­a­try, ef­fec­tive May 17, 2023.

The oth­er pro­mo­tions in­clude Pro­fes­sor Michael Camp­bell of the Cave Hill Cam­pus in Psy­chol­o­gy and Glob­al Health, Pro­fes­sor Na­garani Pon­akala of the Mona Cam­pus in Ap­plied Math­e­mat­ics and Pro­fes­sor Na­dine Mc­Cloud of the Mona Cam­pus in Ap­plied Econo­met­rics.

The ap­point­ments, which took ef­fect on March 12, 2026, fol­lowed re­views by in­ter­nal and ex­ter­nal as­ses­sors of the can­di­dates’ re­search, pub­li­ca­tions and pro­fes­sion­al con­tri­bu­tions.

In a state­ment, The UWI said the pro­fes­sors have made sig­nif­i­cant con­tri­bu­tions in fields rang­ing from men­tal health and cli­mate fi­nance to steel­pan schol­ar­ship, vet­eri­nary pub­lic health, de­vel­op­ment eco­nom­ics and in­ter­na­tion­al re­la­tions.

Brief bios

Pro­fes­sor Jean­nine Re­my (St Au­gus­tine) – A mu­sic schol­ar and arranger recog­nised in­ter­na­tion­al­ly for her con­tri­bu­tions to steel­pan per­for­mance, com­po­si­tion and re­search.

Pro­fes­sor Kar­la Georges (St Au­gus­tine) – A vet­eri­nary epi­demi­ol­o­gist whose work fo­cus­es on zoonot­ic dis­eases, food safe­ty and the One Health ap­proach link­ing an­i­mal, hu­man and en­vi­ron­men­tal health.

Pro­fes­sor Theodor Tu­doroiu (St Au­gus­tine) – An in­ter­na­tion­al re­la­tions schol­ar known for re­search on geopol­i­tics, de­vel­op­ment and Chi­na’s role in the Glob­al South.

Pro­fes­sor Preeya Mo­han (St Au­gus­tine) – A de­vel­op­ment econ­o­mist whose re­search ex­am­ines cli­mate change, eco­nom­ic re­silience and pol­i­cy chal­lenges fac­ing Small Is­land De­vel­op­ing States.

Pro­fes­sor Michael Camp­bell (Cave Hill) – A psy­chol­o­gist and glob­al men­tal health re­searcher spe­cial­is­ing in men­tal health in Small Is­land De­vel­op­ing States.

Pro­fes­sor Na­garani Pon­akala (Mona) – An ap­plied math­e­mati­cian whose re­search fo­cus­es on flu­id dy­nam­ics and bio­med­ical mod­el­ling.

Pro­fes­sor Na­dine Mc­Cloud (Mona) – An econ­o­mist recog­nised for her work in econo­met­rics, macro­eco­nom­ics and de­vel­op­ment pol­i­cy.

Pro­fes­sor Nelleen Ba­boolal (St Au­gus­tine, re­tired) – A psy­chi­a­trist whose re­search on de­men­tia and age­ing has helped shape men­tal health pol­i­cy in Trinidad and To­ba­go and the wider Caribbean
